La diferencia entre estos dos nombres ha causado muchas polémicas, pero actualmente se ha tomado la decisión de utilizarlos siguiendo estos criterios:
- Español: para hacer referencia a la lengua hablada en España, muchos países de América y otras partes del mundo.
- Castellano: para referirse al dialecto hablado en Castilla y para referirse al dialecto del español hablado en España como lengua común (ya que en España existen otras lenguas cooficiales: catalán, gallego y vasco).
