La vaghezza semantica è quella proprietà delle lingue naturali per la quale non esiste una predeterminazione assoluta dell’estensione semantica di un segno linguistico. Il significato associato ad un significante può essere visto come un’area con un centro semantico ben definito e condiviso e contorni indefiniti, sfumati, vaghi, appunto, che possono essere rimodellati, estesi o ristretti. Ogni significato è quindi per sua natura plurideterminabile.
Un esempio: la parola italiana penna aveva in origine un significato ristretto ad indicare un elemento del piumaggio degli animali. La vaghezza semantica che caratterizzava questo significato ha permesso che fosse esteso ad indicare prima la piuma d’animale usata per scrivere e poi, metonimicamente, ogni oggetto usato per scrivere.
La vaghezza semantica, detta anche “indeterminatezza semantica”, è quindi condizione del cambiamento e dell’estensione semantica dei segni linguistici, e di conseguenza dell’onnipotenza semantica delle lingue naturali.
La vaghezza semantica, che potrebbe teoricamente portare alla schizoidia del sistema linguistico ha in sé un suo correttivo. L’estensione di un significato permette infatti di arrivare all’autoriferimento: ogni segno linguistico può indicare se stesso. Si creano così le condizioni per un uso metalinguistico delle lingue naturali e quindi per un controllo sociale della vaghezza semantica.
