In phonology, a high vowel is a vowel that is produced with the tongue at a level close to the top of the oral cavity, and above the position used for mid vowels.
Examples
- High: [i], [y], [ɨ], [ʉ], [ɯ], [u]
- Near close: [ɪ], [ʏ], [ɪ̈], [ʊ̈], [ʊ]
