Borrowing can refer to two closely related concepts:
- The adoption of elements from a foreign language into one's native language; see borrowing (i.e. adoption).
- More generally, the copying of elements from one language into another language, i.e. either the adoption of elements from a foreign language into one's native language, or the retention of elements of one's native language when using a foreign language; see borrowing (i.e. copying).
