Syllable

Syllable is a unit of pronunciation that consists of a syllabic element (usually a vowel) (see Nucleus), that can be preceded (see Onset) and/or followed (see Coda) by (none or more) consonants.

Example

the English word diploma consists of 3 syllables: di.plo.ma
