Iconicity

Iconicity is a property of signs or systems of signs. A sign is said to be iconic if there is a direct association between its meaning and its form. In linguistics, the term 'iconicity' contrasts with arbitrariness. Iconic signs are called icons, non-iconic (arbitrary) ones symbols.
