Self-repair

In conversation analysis, self-repair is a repair that is performed by the speaker of the utterance that needs repair (Levinson 1983:340–341).

Examples

In the following exchange, the last turn is a self-repair:

• A: I need a new bolt for my oil filter.
• B: A BOLT?
• A: I mean for my oil PAN.

The following is a self-initiated self-repair:

• I need a new bolt for my oil filt—um, PAN.
