A 'closed syllable is a syllable which is closed by (a) consonant(s). A syllable which is not closed is an open syllable. The rhyme of a closed syllable branches: besides the nucleus (or peak), it also contains a coda. The English words cat [kat], mice [maɪs], and tent [tent] exemplify closed syllables.
