The term dative was used, following Fillmore (1968:24-25), for the semantic role of an animate being that is conscious of being affected by the state or event expressed by the verb.

This term was coined by Fillmore (1968), extending the meaning of dative case, which in many languages expresses Fillmore's dative role.
