A collection of many minute cells lying on the basilar membrane inside the cochlear duct. The organ of Corti is a helical structure, about 34 millimeters long, which contains the hair cells: sensory receptors that convert the mechanical motion of the basilar membrane into electrical signals that can be transmitted and processed by the central nervous system.
