The term base is used in various technical senses:
- In morphology, it is the elment to which morphological processes apply; see base (in morphology).
- In numeral systems, it may refer to a morpheme that is multiplied; see base (in numeral systems).
- In (older) transformational grammar, it refers to the component of grammar to which transformations apply; see base (in transformational grammar).
- In Cognitive Grammar, it refers to the background knowledge that is necessary to understand what a concept designates; see base (in Cognitive Grammar).
