References to other terminological dictionaries should be avoided in Glottopedia. Glottopedia dictionary articles should direct the user to primary sources, not to secondary sources.

Reference format

The references should be listed alphabetically by author, using the following format:

Journal articles:

  • Aissen, Judith. 2003. Differential object marking: Iconicity vs. economy. Natural Language and Linguistic Theory 21(3). 435-483.
  • Itkonen, Esa. 2004. Typological explanation and iconicity. Logos and Language 5(1). 21-33.

Books:

  • Bußmann, Hadumod. 2002. Lexikon der Sprachwissenschaft. Stuttgart: Kröner.

Book chapters:

  • Givón, T. 1985. Iconicity, isomorphism and non-arbitrary coding in syntax. In: Haiman, John (ed.). 1985. Iconicity in syntax. Amsterdam: Benjamins, 187-219.
  • Thompson, Chad. 1996. On the grammar of body parts in Koyukon Athabaskan. In: Chappell, Hilary & McGregor, William (eds.). 1996. The grammar of inalienability. Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter, 651-676.

Including references

Especially for references that are used frequently, it is useful to create a separate "article" with the reference, and to include this article in the list of references. This saves time in typing the reference, and when frequent references have their own "article", this means that they are easier to search.

Examples of references which have their own "articles" are Jespersen 1924, Bloomfield 1933, Lyons 1968.
