Whereas reanalysis is covert in that it occurs in the minds of listeners, analysis is overt, and provides the demonstrable evidence that a reanalysis has occurred. In diachronic studies, reanalysis means that the hearer understands a form to have a structure/meaning different from the speaker. Whereas reanalysis is covert in that it occurs in the minds of listeners, analysis is overt, and provides the demonstrable evidence that a reanalysis has occurred. Grammaticalization always involves reanalysis and analysis, but not all cases of reanalysis or analysis result in grammaticalization.
