The silent interval or silent gap characterises stop production. This period of silence is the result of the "hold" period in articulation, during which the vocal tract is completely blocked and pressure is being built up. For voiced stops, the silent interval may not be literally silent as the fundamental frequency may run through a part of the 'silent' interval (this is called prevoicing).
