The term xenism is a rare synonym of foreignism.

  • "The first stage is when a word from one language is used in an utterance of another language in order to create a somewhat exotic effect. A this stage, the word is not a borrowing, but rather what [Picoche and Marchello-Nizia 1991:338-339] term a xenism." (Jones & Singh 2005:34)

Adopted from French xénisme, which may itself have been inspired by German Fremdwort.
